Florida’s Fabulous Birds

Palm Beach, Florida

South Florida’s East Coast comes alive with tropical birds each fall, winter and spring.

I take very small groups to several locations that make wildlife photography a true adventure. At Jupiter’s spectacular Riverbend Park, we ride bikes through a Cypress Forest and wetland. By this method, we can cover the 600 acres of scenic vistas and vastly increase the number and variety of wading birds and wildlife we can photograph up close during a daybreak session. At Riverbend, we are able to park our bikes, move around by foot with our monopods to gain the most dramatic compositions. Its common to find the following animals feeding along lakes and marshes in a setting where we can position ourselves for dramatic backlit images with water backgrounds: Florida Whitetailed Deer, Great Blue Herons, Tri-Colored Herons, Little Blue Herons, Great White Egret, Limpkins, Red Tailed Hawks, Anhinga and Wood Storks.

At Boynton Beaches’ Wakodohatchee Preserve and Green Cay Wetlands Preserve,  we walk out on boardwalks into  lively rookeries where Anhinga, Cormorants, Osprey, Herons, Roseatte Spoonbills and Marsh Hens provide excellent subjects within easy range of a 300mm telephoto lens. Participants can’t believe how close the boardwalks take us to an abundance of species that are usually hard to locate and photograph up close.

In the fall and spring, if the mullet are running along the surf or in the Jupiter Inlet, we may take a moment to capture Osprey and Pelicans diving for their prey. We go where the birds have been recently spotted—Green Cay, Riverbend, Winding Waters,  or Loxahatchee Wildlife Preserve.  During the workshop, we learn to photograph birds fishing and flying—two of the most dramatic types of photo opportunities. In the afternoons, you will be mentored in Lightroom and Photoshop techniques specific to creating outstanding wildlife and waterscape photography.
